History

Winfield Berry “Hap” Hale III was born January 23, 1919, in Rogersville, TN to Winfield Berry Hale Jr. and Alma Phillips Hale. He was educated at the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, graduating in May, 1941, summa cum laude.

He volunteered for military service in June 1941, and was trained as a Marine fighter pilot at Jacksonville, FL. He spent two and a half years in the South Pacific, flying from Air-craft carriers, and the islands of Midway, Biniau and Guadalcanal.

He was the direct descendant of Colonel James Richards and Phillip Smith Hale, founders and proprietors of the Hale Springs Resort, for which this Inn is named.
